Last week we traveled to
Sunny California in hopes of enjoying
warmer weather and relaxation.
We started our travels bright and early Thursday morning when we left for the
airport at 7:00 a.m. Kyler was super excited to fly for his first time and
I was super nervous since I hadn't been on a plane for 9 YEARS.
Jason's younger brother works for Jet Blue and was nice enough to share his
buddy passes with us so we would be able to fly for free. The only draw back with using a buddy pass was we had to fly stand by and wouldn't know until the day of whether we would have a seat or not. Knowing this information we planned our trip so that we would be flying on less crowded days and we tried to work around all of the Spring Breaks and Easter.
After arriving at the airport, going through security, and waiting around in the terminal for 2 hours it was time to see if we would have a seat or not. The odds of making it on were good when we had booked the night before, but when it came time there ended up only being 1 seat available.
We decided to send Jason's mom on the plane with hopes that we would meet up with her later that day when we arrived on the next flight.
Kyler was super disappointed and didn't understand why the
plane and grandma Shirley left without us.
Since we had a good portion of the day to wait until the next flight we tried to
cheer Kyler up by taking him to the Children's Museum at the Gateway.
After playing at the museum for most of the day we headed back to the airport for round 2.
We unloaded everything again, went through security, and waited another 2 hours.
Jake thought for sure that we would make the flight. After all we were stand-by seats
2-5 out of 8 available seats. When the time came they called our name and said they had 2 seats left.
At this point we had to make a quick decision who would be going.
Jake decided to go ahead and at the last minute we decided to send Kyler along
with him because his hopes were so high.
The plane was ready to take off so I had less than 3 minutes to hurry and gather his stuff, say good-bye, and give Jake instructions. Once they were boarded and ready to go I asked Jason if he had gotten the car keys from Jake and he had forgot that important detail. So they hurried onto the plane found Jake and returned the keys to us. While all this was happening I was a mess.
I was crying out of frustration, exhaustion, and worrying about how Kyler.
After searching for other flights and finding nothing we made the decision to drive.
So back to the car we headed with a LONG 12 hour drive ahead of us.
Kyler LOVED his first flight and was such a good boy.
Since he and Jake were the last to board there weren't two seats left together.
So Kyler ended up sitting in between two older ladies while Jake sat across the isle.
When they landed in Long Beach, Kyler was lucky enough to sit in the cock pit and check
out all of the buttons.
So after being up 24 hours straight, going to the airport twice, driving for 12 hours straight during the night we finally made it to our destination.
Days 2-6 coming soon...
and I promise they won't be as lengthy.
